Project Overview

We were asked to design, tender and project manage the repair and redecoration of a Grade I listed Main House on Bath Spa University’s Newton Park campus. This historic building required a sensitive approach to preserve the historical features whilst bringing the facilities up to modern standards. The project was not just about conservation work but had to be done with minimal disruption to the university’s staff and students.

Survey and Planning

The project started with a full survey of the Main House to identify areas of repair, exterior and interior redecoration and original feature conservation. We worked with conservation specialists to develop a plan that respected the building’s heritage. This involved selecting materials and techniques that were in line with traditional methods so that the restoration work would blend in with the existing building.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the biggest challenges of this project was finding the balance between the conservation needs of the building and the functional requirements of a modern university. To address this we used a phased approach to the work, so different areas of the building could be left operational while work was being carried out in other areas. This minimised the impact on university operations and meant staff and students were minimally disrupted.

Project Execution and Completion

The project was completed on time and to budget and the Manor House is now looking amazing. This project shows our ability to manage complex projects. Our sensitive approach combined with practical project management delivered all the stakeholder expectations. We are proud to have played our part in preserving such an important historic building so it can be enjoyed by future generations.
